World Languages and Cultures BA

The curriculum is designed to provide students with well-developed language and intercultural skills and a broad knowledge base that will enable them to pursue studies at the graduate level or to enter the job market in positions that demand the ability to communicate effectively, to reason critically, to solve problems creatively, and to work on culturally diverse teams successfully, in more than one language and a variety of cultural contexts.

Core Areas A-E

Satisfactorily complete core Areas A-E, as listed in the Core Curriculum section of this catalog.

Core Curriculum

Georgia College, in cooperation with other institutions of the University System of Georgia, has adopted a core curriculum to allow the transfer of credit from one University System institution to another without penalty to the student. The University System's core curriculum is comprised of five areas: Areas A - E.

Students successfully completing an Area A-E course at one University System institution will receive full credit in Areas A-E for the course upon transfer to another System institution, even if the area has not been completed, as long as the course is within the area hour limitations of either the sending institution or the receiving institution and the student does not change from a non-science major to a science major.

Georgia College's approved core curriculum courses for Areas A, B, C, D, and E are listed below. Courses not listed here are not approved for these areas.

Note: This requirement may be satisfied by passing the relevant CLEP or through a petition to waive the courses due to language proficiency at a higher level.

Language / Culture Foundation Courses

Satisfactorily complete courses to satisfy the 18-hour requirement for Area F.

• Elementary language courses in major language (SPAN 1001, SPAN 1002 or FREN 1001, FREN 1002)
• Elementary language courses in a second language: (SPAN 1001, SPAN 1002 or FREN 1001, FREN 1002 or GRMN 1001, GRMN 1002 or ITAL 1001, ITAL 1002)
• Third- and Fourth-semester language courses in a second language: (SPAN 2001, SPAN 2002 or FREN 2001, FREN 2002 or GRMN 2001, GRMN 2002 or ITAL 2001, ITAL 2002)
• Any 1000- or 2000-level course in Art, World Geography, World Literature, International Studies, Music, World Civilization, Anthropology, Communications, Theater, Philosophy, World/Global Economics, and the following other institutionally approved courses:

Satisfactorily complete 9 hours of target-language-taught or English-language-taught elective courses at the 2000- to 4000-levels not already counted in the core and having a global language, culture, society, or skills component that complements the student's target-language-taught WLAC coursework. Students may choose courses from the following disciplines: FREN, SPAN, GRMN, ITAL, MFLG, ENGL, IDST, ARTS, HIST, GEOG, POLS, SOCI, MUSC, PHIL, ANTH, AFST, BLST, RELI, THEA, WMST, BCOM, MSCM, LING, and RHET.

Capstone

Satisfactorily complete one of the following courses:

• MFLG 4900: Senior Capstone (3)
• FREN 4960: Internship/Practicum/Research (1-15)
• SPAN 4960: Internship/Practicum/Research (1-6)

Total Credit Hours: 0-3

Note: Students are encouraged to fulfill their capstone requirement by taking MFLG 4900, the capstone seminar. However, students who cannot take MFLG 4900 (offered only in spring semester) can, with prior approval of the department chair, substitute FREN or SPAN 4960 for MFLG 4900. When appropriate, students may fulfill the capstone requirement for two majors through a single project or experience. The requirements of both departments must be met, and the project must be approved separately by both departments. Students needing to fulfill the capstone through a zero-credit option should contact the department.

Additional Degree Requirements

• Satisfactorily complete all graduation requirements listed in the academic policies section of this catalog.
• Earn a grade of C or higher in all major courses.
• Students who place out of 2001 or 2002 and wish to receive academic credit for 2001 or 2002 should take the CLEP exam.
• Students who place out of 3010 or 3020 and wish to receive academic credit for 3010 or 3020 should request a “course challenge” by contacting the department.
